A Typical Week in the Trump Era

Days after joining Donald Trump‘s legal team, Rudy Giuliani goes on Sean Hannity‘s show and reveals that Donald Trump lied about not knowing about the hush money payment his then lawyer Michael Cohen paid to a porn star that Trump had an extra-marital affair with in 2006. For the most part, Trump’s supporters had absolutely no idea how to react to this revelation, so, for the most part, they simply ignore the fact that it happened or claim that the president’s inability to be honest about practically anything doesn’t concern them.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the official unemployment number dipped to 3.9%, the lowest it’s been since 2000 under then president Bill Clinton, however the labor force participation rate hasn’t increased significantly since Donald Trump took office in 2017, languishing between 62.7% and 62.8% for the last year or so. Trump’s supporters cannot shut up about the 3.9% official unemployment number and seem no longer to care about the historically weak labor force participation rate, despite any significant recovery in the economy requiring a substantial improvement in the labor force participation rate.

Donald Trump announces that the United States is officially unilaterally abandoning the 2015 Iran Deal negotiated by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, and China. Trump’s supporters, focused on how much they hated the deal negotiated under then president Barack Obama, react with naked Schadenfreude while ignoring the dismay of American allies, with no indication of anything to put in its place, and little indication of how this might affect the talks with North Korea‘s leader Kim Jong Un.
Michael Avenatti reveals that Donald Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, now under federal investigation for several criminal counts, received large payments from several large corporations, including Russian oligarchs. Trump’s supporters, not being in a position to deny Avenatti’s claims simply attacked his client, Stormy Daniels, being the porn star Trump cheated on his third wife with – the current First Lady, Melania Trump, who incidentally also had a career in porn.

Donald Trump announces that three American journalists held by the North Koreans since Obama’s tenure (even though two of the three journalists were actually taken into North Korean custody in 2017 months after Obama had left office) have been released by the North Koreans. Trump’s supporters are loudly claiming that Trump is responsible for this turn of events, ignoring, of course, that the North Korean government unilaterally announced this would happen last week.
We now live in a reality where anything good that happens is Trump’s doing, and anything bad that happens is someone else’s fault, at least if you ask Trump’s supporters. For a tens of millions of Americans, whether or not a specific news item is important depends entirely on whether or not it is politically convenient to Donald Trump. How, exactly, is this an improvement over the Obama Era? Does anyone else feel like they are going slowly insane?
