Did You Get the Memo?

Mmm, yeah, you see, we’re putting the cover sheets on all TPS reports before they go out… Did you see the memo about this?”
-Bill Lumbergh, Office Space

So let’s deal with the most ridiculous of political melodramas presently unfolding, being crumpled up, and unfolding again on the national stage. A melodrama so excruciatingly and bureaucratically American that I can only imagine how ludicrous it must appear to almost anyone outside the States.

For those that haven’t been keeping up with this, Trump supporters have demanded the release of a memorandum written by Devin Nunes detailing his account of closed hearings about the FBI’s conduct which contains classified information uncovered during the interference by Russian intelligence in the 2016 presidential election.

Devin is the GOP Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and, let’s not forget, served on Donald Trump‘s presidential transitional team soon after the election in November 2016. In early 2017, Nunes had to briefly step down from the Russia Investigation because he was feeding confidential information about the ongoing House investigation to his former boss (Trump). Devin has since been put back in charge and has been denigrating and undercutting the work of his own committee’s investigation into his former boss’s activities during the election.

Just so it’s clear to everyone playing at home or watching from abroad, the Republican Party turned the investigation of possible collusion of the Trump campaign over to people who worked on or with the Trump campaign. No conflict of interest to see here, right?

The Republicans on the committee voted to release the GOP memo, the Democrats voted against it. Not political at all, right? Then the Republicans took the memo to clear it with president Trump, and now Democrats are accusing Nunes of changing the memo at the behest of Trump. So, in other words, politics as usual.

All people are born alike – except Republicans and Democrats.”
-Groucho Marx

Republican partisans look forward to the Nunes memo, because they actually believe it will exonerate President Trump’s 2016 campaign activities while simultaneously revealing gross partisanship at the FBI, which many Trump supporters still believe was behind the entire Russian conspiracy narrative to begin with.

Again, for the sake of clarity, Republicans are using unethical partisan tactics that do undermine the credibility of Congressional Republicans to uncover alleged unethical partisan tactics within the FBI that would undermine the credibility of the FBI, if true.

Make sense to anyone else? Good. Me neither.

The only casualty has been any hope of a serious, bipartisan, congressional investigation into the interference by a foreign power in the 2016 presidential elections that every major American intelligence agency affirmed happened. This is obviously totally fine, because everyone knows that a political slap fight between Republicans and Democrats is so much more important than protecting the integrity of our elections against the undue interference by foreign powers.

No one comes out a winner in this political circus (except, of course, the Russian intelligence services). The House of Representatives devolving into simply unnecessary partisan gamesmanship serves absolutely no purpose, nor does it serve to uncover the truth that Americans deserve to know. It’s simply more dysfunctional, partisan nonsense, and yet another clear indication America desperately needs a new political party, if only to referee the interminable partisanship in Washington.
